Eocene forest landscape. Artwork of a forest landscape in the Baltic during the Eocene (56 to 34 million years ago). This region now lies in northern Europe. At top left,an assassin spider (Archaeidae) is about to pounce on a jumping spider (Saltacidae),which in turn is about to jump onto a caddisfly (upper right) that is stuck in oozing resin. When fossilised, this resin forms amber. At bottom right is a brown lacewing (Sympherobius siriae). In the background, two primates (Europolemur) on a fallen tree are wary of the giant flightless bird (Gastornis, centre left) that is looking for prey. Near centre,by the stream,is an ancestral horse (Propalaeotherium) | |
