A view of coppice-with-standards woodland,Wayland Wood,Norfolk UK. Coppice woodland is an ancient method of tree management, whereby scattered trees ( the standards ) are allowed to grow to maturity in order to yield timber, and the understorey trees (the coppice) are cut to growth on a periodic basis with an interval of around 10 years. The understorey growth between coppicing episodes yields small wood suitable for firewood, fencing, poles and similar small items, depending on the species. The picture shows an area that was coppiced two years previously. The standard trees are oak,Quercus robur, and the coppiced trees beneath are bird cherry,Prunus padus |
