Lobengula,King of Matabeleland,19th-century artwork. At lower right,Lobengula is receiving his army on their return from a successful raid among the Mashonas (the Shona people). Lobengula ruled the Matabele,a people from southern Africa related to the Zulus. The regions then known as Matabeleland and Mashonaland were in what is now Zimbabwe.
