Military field telegraphy. US marines using a telegraph machine to communicate while training or on operations. Telegraphy is a form of communication that uses electrical signals sent down wires. The first practical telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse in 1837. Telegraphy quickly spread across the USA and Europe, and revolutionized communications. It was gradually replaced by radio from the 1890s onwards. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The bulk of the Bain images date from the 1890s to the 1930s | |
