Greenland hunters. 16th-century artwork showing an Inuit man in Greenland hunting seabirds from a kayak. More scenes of Inuit society are shown on shore, including a village,a mother and child, and a dog hauling a kayak. This is a modern copy of the frontispiece to 'Historia Navigationis' (1577),an account of the travels of English navigator and explorer Martin Frobisher (c.1535-1594) to the Davis Straits area of Greenland in the 1570s. In 1576,Frobisher had been given command of an Arctic expedition to seek the North-West Passage. One of the three ships sank, the other deserted. Frobisher sailed onwards and discovered what is now called Frobisher Bay | |
