This visit was part of the victory celebrations for the Russo-Japanese War. The Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy,commanded by Admiral Togo Heihachiro (1848-1934),destroyed the Russian Baltic Fleet at the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905.
