Coining. 19th-century artwork of workers manufacturing coins. The coins are being produced by a method involving stamping the coins from a soft metal, rather than casting from a molten metal. It is also called hammered coinage. Sheet metal of the correct type and thickness (centre) is placed between two dies (right). The upper die is then hit with a hammer to impress images on both sides of the coin. Artwork from 'London' (Charles Knight,1841) | |
