John Fothergill (1712-1780),English physician and botanist. Fothergill was initially apprenticed to an apothecary,qualifying as a medical doctor in 1736 after studying at the University of Edinburgh. He practised medicine in London,and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763. His papers and works covered topics such as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation,trigeminal neuralgia (also known as Fothergill's disease),and streptococcal sore throat.
