Schmallenberg virus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virus particles (virions,red) of the Schmallenberg virus. This is an informal name for a viral disease of livestock that was first reported in Europe in late 2011. Is part of the orthobunyavirus grouping,and causes fever and stillbirth in cattle,sheep and goats. It is spread by biting insects such as midges and mosquitoes. By 2012,it had spread to the UK.
