Geothermal district heating. Block artwork of the underground and surface pipes used to distribute steam or heated water in a district heating system. The heat is not from a power station, but is obtained by harnessing geothermal energy from deep underground through boreholes drilled to great depths. The depth of 4000 to 6000 metres is shown at right. The heated steam is shown in red pipes, with cooled water shown in the blue pipes. The energy flow is controlled at a heat exchanger plant (lower centre on surface). Geothermal district heating systems like this are used in many places worldwide, such as Iceland, the USA,New Zealand and Italy | |
