Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) process. Artwork of the first two stages, where rock layers are fractured by fluids pumped in from the surface. At top is a drill bit making the initial bore hole. At bottom are the inner steel piping and outer cement casing. The process is used to extract gas from shale deposits. A mixture of sand, chemicals and water is pumped under high pressure into horizontal wells to form fissures in the shale. The sand keeps the fissures open, allowing gas to flow into the well and be taken to the surface. Fracking is known to cause small earthquakes (microseismic events). For the later two stages, see image C015/0969. For an overview see image C015/0327 | |
