Inside the pipes is a refrigerant,a substance with a low boiling temperature. At bottom is a compressor (round). This compresses the refrigerant,which at this stage is a gas. This increase in pressure heats the refrigerant (red). As the refrigerant passes through the external pipes the heat dissipates and the gas condenses into a liquid. The liquid passes through an expansion valve (round,top) into the internal pipes,where it boils and vaporises back into a gas. This draws heat out of the refrigerator.
