Albert Cushing Read (1887-1967),US military pilot who was commander as part of a crew of six on the first transatlantic flight in May 1919. Flying in a Curtiss NC flying boat (the NC-4) from the USA to Europe,stops were made for fuel and repairs on Atlantic islands,and the aircraft followed a guide chain of 40 US warships. The route was New York (8 May),Newfoundland (16 May),the Azores (17-27 May) and Lisbon (27 May). They then flew to Plymouth (31 May). Read became a Rear Admiral in the US Navy. The NC-4 crew were awarded commemorative medals in 1930 by the US Congress. Photographed between 1918 and 1920 | |
