Diamond mine workers, historical artwork. Guards at a diamond mine securing the hands of workers during a break to prevent them stealing diamonds. This mine is in the Cape Colony, part of the area that is now South Africa. Slavery was abolished in the Cape Colony in 1834,and manual labour was carried out largely by the local population for seasonal wages. Diamond mining prompted large migration, and restrictive laws were passed to control the workforce. This laid the basis for what became apartheid.
