Cutaneous leishmaniasis. Lesions on the face of a man in Palestine in 1917 in a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The local name for this condition at the time was Jericho buttons, referring to an outbreak of this condition in and around the nearby ancient city of Jericho. This is the skin form of a protozoan parasite infection (of the genus Leishmania) transmitted by sandfly bites. Raised, red lesions ('buttons') develop that can become infected with bacteria.
