Jaguar and cougar. 18th-century artwork of a jaguar (Panthera onca,top) and a cougar (Puma concolor,bottom). Both these big cats are found in the Americas,with the jaguar being the larger and more powerful predator. This artwork is an engraving from a 1770 edition of volume 8 of 'Histoire naturelle generale et particuliere' by the French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc,Comte de Buffon (1707-1788).
