Oil palm plantation research. Workers carrying out research at an oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantation,in Sumatra,Indonesia. A radioactive marker (rubidium) solution is placed in contact with the trees' roots and the movement of the marker through the plants tissues is then tracked to assess the efficiency of the root system. The fruit of the oil palm contains oils that are used in many food products and non-food household products. It is also potentially useful for the production of biodiesel.
