Lunar craters. 19th-century artwork of some of the craters visible on the near side of the Moon. The three craters at top are: Archimedes Crater (upper left,82 kilometres across),Autolycus Crater (upper right,39 kilometres across),and Aristillus Crater (top right,55 kilometres across),all in Mare Imbrium, with the Montes Apenninus mountains across bottom. The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610,and then developed further as telescopes improved. The observations included recording changes in the shadows cast by high mountains and deep craters. This artwork dates from 1880 | |
