Comet moth cocoon detail. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a comet moth cocoon showing one of the numerous holes (or fenestration) which are produced when the cocoon is spun by the larva. This moth is native to the Madagascan rain forests and the holes are to protect the pupa from drowning in the daily heavy rains. Often called the Madagascan moon moth, this species is endangered in the wild because of habitat loss but the comet moth is being successfully bred in captivity.
