Brood cells within a nest of the German wasp (Vespa germanica). The nest is constructed by a fertilised queen in Spring. She lays fertilised eggs into the brood cells, together with paralysed prey as a food source for the young. The first young wasps are female workers, and assist the queen in the further development of the nest. The picture shows brood cells in a nest in early summer. In the centre are three cells containing developing wasps. The other cells in the picture are as yet empty. The paper caps which sealed the active cells have been removed in order to display the contents. Each cell is approximately 4mm across | |
