Model from Laperouse expedition skull. Reconstruction of a human head based on a skull from a skeleton found in 2003 on the Pacific island of Vanikoro. It is thought that the skeleton, preserved in a layer of sediment on the reef, was that of one of the members of the expedition led by the French explorer and naval officer Jean Francois de Galaup,Count of Laperouse (1741-1788?,portrait at left). The expedition ships were wrecked on reefs around the island. It is thought some survivors lived on the island for several years, but their ultimate fate is not certain.
