Crates was a Cynic philosopher who, like Diogenes, the most famous of the Cynics, gave away his money to live a life of poverty in Athens. The Cynics advocated asceticism. non-conformism and the denial of luxuries, wealth and social status. Unusually for Ancient Greece his marriage to Hipparchia was based on mutual respect and equality. This late 15th c. marble-inlay mosaic from Siena shows him hurling from a basket his money and jewellery as a symbol of the vanity of earthly possessions | |
