Calf muscles. Computer artwork of a posterior view of some of the muscles and tendons of the calves and their attachment to the bones of the leg. These are the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, collectively known as the triceps surae. They originate from the lower end of the femur (thigh bone) and attach to the heel bone (calcaneus) via the large achilles tendon (white). The soleus lies under the gastrocnemius, and is seen at right where knee ligaments (white) are shown in the popliteal fossa (space at the back of the knee). These calf muscles mainly act to flex (bend) the foot at the ankle joint | |
