Curiosity's descent blast marks. These grey patches were caused by the rocket engines of the descent stage of NASA's Curiosity rover blasting the ground as it landed on Mars. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed in the Gale Crater on 6 August 2012. It's mission objectives include studying and analysing the rocks and minerals on Mars for evidence of liquid water on the planet in the past. Mars is a cold desert world with a thin carbon dioxide atmosphere. This image is part of a larger mosaic obtained on 8 August 2012 by Curiosity's 34mm Mast Camera.
