Mount Sharp rock layers,as imaged by NASA's Curiosity rover. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed in the Gale Crater,Mars,on 6 August 2012. Confirming observations from orbit, the images show a discontinuity (possibly an unconformity) in rock strata on the nearby Mount Sharp. The strata across top are inclined at an angle different to those below, the dividing line best seen at upper left. The lower strata are relatively flat and include hydrated minerals lacking in the upper strata. The observations provide information about sedimentation processes.
