Wall of Gale Crater on Mars, obtained by NASA's Curiosity rover. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed here on 6 August 2012. This area of crater wall is north of the landing site. A network of valleys here is believed to have formed by water erosion (a fluvial system). Such networks date from a time when water flowed freely across the surface. The main channel deposit is the white zig-zag at centre, resembling a dirt road. This feature is some 18 kilometres from the rover. Image obtained by Curiosity's 34mm Mast Camera on 9 August 2012 and brightened to aid analysis. For the original, see C014/4931 | |
