Congenital syphilis. Coloured X-ray of the lower legs of a child with congenital syphilis. Syphilis,which is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum,is passed from infected mothers to the foetus during pregnancy. Both tibias (shinbones) are bowed forwards,a deformity known as sabre shin that is characteristic of latent congenital syphilis. There is also a lesion (pink) in the left tibia (right)
