Global winds. This model shows surface winds and vertical wind circulation cells due to heating on a non-rotating Earth globe. The winds form three distinct bands,in the tropics (red arrows and pink cells),at mid-latitudes (purple arrows and cells),and in the polar regions (blue arrows and cells). Patterns in the surface winds and the vertical circulation (10 to 15 kilometres upwards in the atmosphere) are caused by the effect of heat from sunlight. Additional patterns caused by the Coriolis effect, where winds in each hemisphere are deflected in opposite directions by Earth's rotation and the cells are distinct, are seen in image C014/4789 | |
