Captured German U-boat. This is the SM UC-5 minelayer submarine,operated by the German Imperial Navy during the First World War (1914-1918). A small U-boat with a crew of 14,it operated in coastal waters such as the English Channel. Its mines (two visible here) sank 29 ships. It ran aground on 27 April 1916 near Harwich,to where it was towed after being captured by the Royal Navy (British and German flags present). Here,it is at Sheerness.
