APEX telescope and ice penitentes at night. The Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) is a radio telescope located at an altitude of 5100 metres above sea level,at the Llano de Chajnantor Observatory in Chile's Atacama desert. The dish has a diameter of 12 metres. Here,it is surrounded by ice penitentes (white). Penitentes,or nieves penitentes, are a snow formation found at high altitudes. They take the form of tall thin blades of hardened snow,or ice, closely spaced with the blades oriented towards the general direction of the sun | |
