The Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) is a radio telescope located at an altitude of 5100 metres above sea level,at the Llano de Chajnantor Observatory in Chile's Atacama desert. The dish has a diameter of 12 metres. Here,it is surrounded by ice penitentes (white). Penitentes,or nieves penitentes,are a snow formation found at high altitudes.
