William Halsted (1852-1922),American surgeon. Halsted was a pioneer of modern surgery. He was a champion of aseptic technique, introducing the use of latex gloves during surgery and the sterilisation of surgical instruments and theatres. After reading of cocaine's anaesthetic effects,he experimented with its use as a local anaesthetic. He became a life-long addict, but proved cocaine was safe and effective for anaesthesia. He performed the first radical mastectomy to treat breast cancer,a previously untreatable disease. He also implemented the Halstedian approach to surgery, which emphasised the careful handling of human tissue, control of bleeding and anatomically accurate dissection and suturing of tissue | |
