Albertus Magnus (1193-1280),German theologian, lecturing and holding a staff. Albertus was a Dominican friar and bishop who believed in the peaceful coexistence of science and religion. Medieval philosophers relied heavily on the logic of Aristotle, translated and summarised by Boethius and in the commentaries of the Arab-Spaniard Averroes. Albertus was the first scholar to apply Aristotle's philosophy to Christian thought. This engraving, where he is described as Bishop of Regensburg,is from 'Les vrais pourtraits et vies des hommes illustres' (1584) by the French writer and explorer Andre Thevet (1502-1590) | |
