Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849),French engineer. In 1793 Brunel fled France as a royalist refugee from the French Revolution. In 1799 he settled in England. He was the engineer for the first Thames Tunnel (upper left,constructed 1825 to 1843),and was knighted in 1841. On the table are some of his inventions and achievements,such as a miner's safety lamp,a cotton winding machine,and a model of a lighthouse. His son was the railway and ship engineer,Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This 1846 mezzotint engraving by English artist J.
