Holtz machine. Steroegraphic images showing a Holtz electrostatic influence machine emitting sparks (top). This device was an electrostatic induction generator that converted mechanical work into electrostatic energy, and only needed an initial charge to begin operation. It was invented by German physicist Wilhelm Holtz (1836-1913) in 1865,and was the first really powerful such device to be developed. Stereographic images are designed to be combined to produce a 3D view. Photographed in 1876 by Charles Francis Himes (1838-1918). This Holtz machine was presented to Dickinson College,Carlisle,Pennsylvania,USA | |
