THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) satellites in orbit, computer artwork. This NASA mission consisted of five identical probes used to study violent energy releases (substorms) that occur in the Earth's magnetosphere. The mission aim was to identify the cause of these events, which intensify the aurorae near the Earth's poles. The satellites were launched on February 17th 2007. They found that magnetic reconnection, which occurs when stressed magnetic field lines suddenly 'snap',was the cause of the substorms. In 2010 two of the THEMIS probes were moved into lunar orbits for the ARTEMIS (Acceleration,Reconnection,Turbulence and Electrodynamics of the Moon's Interaction with the Sun) mission | |
