Mussel-based glue. Mussel (family Mytilidae) resting on blocks of MDF (medium-density fibreboard) that have been produced using glue from mussels. Beneath are soya bean sprouts. This 'glue' is normally used by mussels to stick themselves to rocks and other underwater objects. The genes controlling mussel glue production were implanted into soya plants (Glycine max). These were then used to produce the glue in large enough quantities for commercial use. Mussel glue is very strong and non-toxic compared to standard urea formaldehyde based glues that are harmful to the environment | |
