Lafayette Benedict Mendel (1872-1935),US biochemist. After studying at Yale University,Mendel obtained his PhD in chemistry in 1893 from Yale's Sheffield Scientific School. He went on to found the science of nutrition,identifying essential amino acids and studying Vitamin A,Vitamin B,lysine and tryptophan. His honours include membership of the National Academy of Sciences (1913),and Sterling Professor at Yale (1921). His major works include 'Nutrition,the Chemistry of Life' (1923).
