Heysham nuclear power stations lit up at dusk. Heysham 1 is at right and Heysham 2 at left. The Heysham nuclear power stations, located on the same site at Heysham harbour,Lancashire,UK,consist of two advanced gas-cooled reactors (AGRs),and began generating power in 1988. They were designed with a capacity for 1150 (Heysham 1) and 1250 (Heysham 2) megawatts (MW) of electrical power. The fuel is pellets of enriched uranium dioxide that produce heat by nuclear fission. The heat is used to turn water to steam. The steam drives turbines that generate electricity | |
