Chromatrope design,19th-century artwork. Invented in 1846 by the Scottish physicist David Brewster (1781-1868),this device is similar to the earlier kaleidoscope. When rotated, the overlapping coloured plates produce patterns when backlit. These patterns can be projected into a wall using a projecting light (then called a magic lantern).
