Telegraph office battery room. 19th-century artwork showing workers producing and maintaining wet-cell batteries used to provide power in a telegraph office. This large underground area is known as a battery room. In the 19th century, when more convenient forms of batteries had not yet been invented, battery rooms were used to keep the corrosive chemicals (such as acids) apart from the equipment used in the offices. This battery room, for the central telegraph office in Paris,France, used 9000 batteries.
