Daniel Colladon (1802-1893),Swiss physicist. Colladon developed a technique for illuminating water fountains. The principle involved light being trapped in the water by total internal reflection. Colladon discovered this effect in 1841 while lecturing at the University of Geneva,Switzerland. This led to illuminated fountains being established all over Europe, including at the Universal Exposition (World Fair) of 1889 in Paris,France. Colladon also worked on the speed of sound in water (see C013/8775 and C013/8776). Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree' | |
