Spectrum of light experiment. 19th-century artwork showing a method of obtaining a spectrum of colours from sunlight. A beam of light allowed in through a shutter is falling on a bowl of water in which a mirror has been placed at an angle of around 60 degrees. The light passes through the water, reflects off the mirror, and is dispersed as it passes back out through the water. Different colours of light refract more than others, producing a spectrum of colours (displayed on wall at left) like that seen in a rainbow. Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree' | |
