Castaway at sea,Tichbourne case. Roger Tichbourne, the heir to a large fortune and baronetcy, had been missing presumed dead after the shipwreck of the ship Bella off Brazil in April 1854. In 1866,a claimant from Australia claimed to be Tichbourne and was accepted by Tichbourne's mother. A failed civil case led to a criminal case in which the claimant was convicted in 1874 of perjury and found to be Arthur Orton, son of a butcher from Wapping. Orton, despite popular support, served ten years in prison and died in poverty. Lithograph from volume 6 (1878) of the 9-volume 'The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne' (1875-1880) | |
