Arthur Orton (1834-1898),Tichborne case claimant. Roger Tichbourne, the heir to a large fortune and baronetcy, was missing presumed dead after a shipwreck in 1854. In 1866,a claimant travelled from Australia to the UK and was accepted by Tichbourne's mother. A failed civil case (1871-2) led to a criminal case (1873-4) in which the claimant was convicted of perjury and found to be Orton, son of a butcher. Orton, despite popular support, served ten years in prison and died in poverty. Lithograph from volume 1 (1876) of the 9-volume 'The Trial at Bar of Sir Roger C. D. Tichborne' (1875-1880) by Orton's counsel Edward Kenealy | |
