Niaux cave paintings. Oil lamp being held up to illuminate cave paintings that are about 13,000 years old. The original painters are also thought to have used oil-based lamps, which may have generated an illusion of movement when viewed. These paintings show bison, and are part of the Niaux cave paintings in the French Pyrenees. The paintings were done by Cro-Magnon man,an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens),using black charcoal and manganese. The paintings may have had religious and artistic significance | |
