Archaea (Methanosarcina sp.) scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These primitive archaebacteria have unusual cell walls and membranes and are methane producers. They are found in places with low or no oxygen such as rubbish dumps, sediments and in some mammal and insect intestines. They are classed as extremophiles because of their living environment which would be deadly to most other lifeforms. Magnification x36950 (x9000 at 10cm wide) | |
