Dentistry caricature. 19th-century artwork showing a dentist extracting a tooth using steel pliers. The title of this version of this work is 'Steel Balsam' with balsam here being an archaic term for balm or treatment. The patient's toothache is being treated by the steel of the dentist's pliers. Before the development of anaesthetics, tooth extraction was extremely painful. The original lithograph, dating from 1825,was published in Paris by the French painter Louis-Leopold Boilly (1761-1845). This version, drawn on stone, was printed in London by D. Alexander of Belgrade Place | |
