From alchemy to chemistry,19th-century artwork. Alchemy is represented by the middle-aged man in the foreground,carrying out a distillation with an alembic. The female muse figure behind him holds a globe representing the world. The young man in the background at left represents the new science of chemistry. He is using a lens to focus sunlight and heat an object inside a bell jar. Modern chemistry began to emerge in the late 18th century.
