Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan. This structure,an example of a stone step pyramid,is part of the large Teotihuacan archaeological site and city near Mexico City,Mexico. Teotihuacan's Mesoamerican culture reached its peak in the first half of the first millennium AD,with a population of around 100,000 making it one of the largest cities in the world at the time. It is thought that this pyramid was constructed from 100 AD onwards, and used for ceremonies to an unknown deity. It is 71 metres high (around 248 steps),and its base measures 223 by 223 metres. Teotihuacan became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 | |
